The Gilson School, formerly the Haw Creek Township High School, was organized in 1902, but classes were held across the street in the grade school building.

In 1903, the frame building on the corner of Hamilton and Roberts, was ready for classes.
Mr. A.B. Roberts came to Gilson School in 1932 and promoted much growth in his 16 years of service as principal.

That Hawcreek Township High School (Gilson School) was the first school in Knox County to implement rural bus service to its students?
That Hawcreek Township High School used a variety of innovative teaching methods (i.e. various educational field trips--many of them long distant) that modern schools utilize today.

April 1933 Gilson School
The last class to graduate from Haw Creek Township High was in 1948.
The school then consolidated with Knoxville School District 202 and it became an elementary school with grades K- 6 until the spring of 1977 when it was closed.

Gilson High School 1924
In 1928, the high school was remodeled with the gymnasium added to the top story along with a classroom on the northwest corner. This is a unique building because of the gymnasium being on the top floor. Very few of these large wooden structures are in existence in the United States today.
